Balancing Work and Family Life
Ever feel like there are not enough hours in the day? Feeling guilty that you have to tell your child, yet again, that you cannot make it to her soccer game? You are not alone in struggling with how to give enough time to your career and your family. While knowing that your situation is not unique, that does not necessarily assist you in dealing with the stress associated with being a working parent. Some suggestions for helping to balance work and home include:
- Schedule a specific activity with your family every week where they receive your undivided attention (quality, not quantity is key!)
- Do not check telephone messages and work email on the weekends.
- Get organized by setting priorities and working smarter not harder.
- Offer to volunteer in your son or daughter’s classroom during weeks that you are not as busy at work so you do not feel so guilty when you cannot or send in treats when requested.
- Plan meals ahead of time (utilizing the slow cooker is an excellent option) so that you are not so rushed in the evenings and can spend more time with your family.
While these suggestions will not eliminate the stress involved with working and having a family, acknowledging that it is a balancing act and having a positive attitude will assist in making it more manageable.
