The Importance of Self-Care
Upon looking at the title of this blog entry did you think to yourself: “who has time for self-care?” If you did, then you are like many people in America. The fact that we often don’t take the time to care for ourselves-physically, emotionally, mentally-often leads to mental and physical health issues.
Everyone can (and should!) take a little time each day to practice self-care. The following are some suggestions for doing so:
- Exercise. Not only does exercising help you physically, it also has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety. You can read more about exercise and mental health here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/depression-and-exercise/MH00043
- Eat sensibly. Eating a balanced diet will provide you with energy to make it through the day.
- Listen to music that makes you feel good.
- Take small breaks throughout the day to relax. Sit quietly for approximately five minutes and practice deep breathing.
- Write in a journal to express your thoughts and feelings.
- Take fifteen minutes before bed to read a book you love.
- Call a friend “just to talk.”
Add to this list and post it where you will see it every day. Practicing just one or two self-care activities daily should lead to a decrease in stress levels and a happier you.
